Tenby United’s Development Squad of young players played their third match of the season under the floodlights at Heyward Lane against Llangwm that was played at pace throughout, with both teams showing commitment and a combative approach that occasionally made it a little more than a ‘friendly’ tussle on a perfect Friday evening for playing and watching the game.

Both sets of forwards threw themselves at each other with some big tackles and there was some decent attacking play as half backs  Dan Thomas and Shane Rossiter (Tenby) and Ian Griffiths and Luke Hayman (Llangwm) were always seeking to spread play wide.

The interval scoreline showed The Seasiders 5-0 in front but that didn’t do justice to the efforts of both sides as Max Brindley was outstanding for Tenby as he always looked likely to create space for others alongside co-centre Mark Hamilton and full back Evan Wilson, with No 15 Carwyn Morgan, Llangwm centres Lewis Murphy and Craig Grice launching attacks and Murphy catching the eye with some powerful kicking.  Wasps’ winger Daniel Morgan also showed his typical commitment on his 33rd birthday as he celebrated with a new pair of boots!
 
The Seasiders had the bigger share of territory in the first half as their back row of Harry Owen, Rob Tuttle and skipper Nick Drewett ever-ready to charge forward, ably assisted by experienced players Rob Luly, Nicky Guymer and Ryan Jones.

They went close in the top corner on several occasions but over-eagerness and solid Wasps’ defence kept them at bay until Ryan Hill finally broke the deadlock after good work by Thomas, Owen and Brindley saw the winger squeeze in at the corner for an unconverted try.

At the other end Llangwm enjoyed a period of pressure where they were denied a try by inches as James Lewis, Ieuan Power, skipper Gethin Thomas and Ian Griffiths were involved before the ball was quickly spread right by Hayman, only for winger Joe Lewin to just miss out in the corner.

Both teams made changes galore in the second half, which was just as competitive nonetheless, and The Wasps used the breeze to good effect as a giant clearance from Murphy was followed up by Lewin, who has switched from football this season and looks a useful Llangwm acquisition.

He caught the last line of Tenby defence through sheer persistence and found support from Craig Grice, who did well to slip a scoring pass for Lewin to do well in diving over in the corner.
 
But straight from the kick off Llangwm made a sloppy error in their own 22 and home No 10 Shane Rossiter to pick up the loose ball and speed 15 metres to the line.

Rossiter shanked his conversion attempt wide but made amends with a well-struck penalty after The Wasps were caught offside in their own 22.


Both sides had other half chances but were unable to take them and so Tenby eased home by 13-5 to continue their development programme, whilst Llangwm played their part in an entertaining match and it was great to see both squads with players aplenty.
